Saree Care 101: How to Keep Your Mul Cotton Sarees Soft and Beautiful Forever

There is nothing quite like the feel of a Mul cotton saree. Lightweight, breathable, and buttery-soft, it is the ultimate comfort wear for the Indian soul. At Sariverse, our Mulmul collection is designed to be lived in—but because the weave is so fine, it deserves a little extra love.

If you want your Mul cotton sarees to stay as vibrant and soft as the day you first draped them, follow our definitive care guide.

1. The First Wash: Setting the Colors

Many artisanal Mul cotton sarees, especially those dyed with natural colors (like Indigo or Bagru prints), may bleed slightly during the first few washes.

  • The Salt Trick: For the very first wash, soak your saree in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 10–15 minutes. This helps "lock" the dye into the fibers.
  • Wash Alone: Always wash a new saree separately to avoid color transfer to other clothes.

2. Washing: Skip the Machine

The agitation of a washing machine can be too harsh for the delicate threads of Mulmul.

  • Hand Wash Only: Use a bucket of cold water and a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent (like Ezee or a gentle baby shampoo).
  • No Scrubbing: Never use a brush or scrub the fabric. Simply dip and swirl the saree gently in the soapy water.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure all soap is washed out using cold, running water.

3. Drying: Avoid the Harsh Sun

Direct sunlight is the enemy of natural dyes. It can make your vibrant sarees look faded and "burnt."

  • Shade is Best: Hang your saree to dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
  • Inside Out: Always dry your saree inside out to protect the print on the front.
  • Don't Wring: Never wring or twist the fabric tightly. Instead, gently squeeze out the excess water and hang it flat.

4. Ironing: The Perfect Crispness

Mul cotton looks best when it is crisp, but it can scorch easily.

  • Damp Ironing: Iron the saree while it is still slightly damp for the best results.
  • Medium Heat: Use a medium-low heat setting. If you are worried about the heat, place a thin cotton cloth over the saree as a "barrier" while ironing.

5. Storage: Let it Breathe

  • Cotton Bags: Avoid plastic covers. Store your Mul cotton sarees in breathable cotton muslin bags or wrap them in an old soft cotton cloth.
  • Refold Regularly: To prevent the fabric from tearing along the fold lines, take your sarees out every 3 months and refold them in a different direction.

A Mul cotton saree is more than a garment; it’s a feeling. By following these simple steps, you ensure that your Sariverse favorites remain heirloom-quality for years to come.
